Tolan began playing for Cliftonville in the middle of the 1990s, making his Irish League debut against Coleraine in November 1996.[1] Under manager Marty Quinn, Tolan was a member of the Cliftonville team to which Quinn brought success to. They won the County Antrim Shield, The Coca-Cola Cup and brought the Irish League to Solitude after finished in front of favourites Linfield and taking the trophy from their bitter rivals Crusaders F.C.. Tolan became one of Cliftonville's top players that season, he then left and rejoined Quinn at Coleraine F.C.
Tolan was reunited with former Cliftonville manager Marty Quinn and a few other players from The Reds. Like his time at Cliftonville, he was a member of the Coleraine team who Quinn brought success to. In 2003, Tolan scored the winning goal in the Irish Cup final against favourites Glentoran. He also won another number of trophies under Quinn. After a bad time with Glentoran and a loan spell at Donegal Celtic, Tolan returned to Coleraine and is retired in 2010.
Tolan only made a couple of show ups for the club due to a number of injurys. Tolan did come back for a few games for manager Roy Coyle. Tolan then agreed to do a loan deal with newly promoted side. Donegal Celtic.
Tolan made less show ups than his former club Glentoran. He did not score any goals but did make a few show ups as well. Tolan then returned to Coleraine.
